What's something new for Canon this month is the announcement of their two new wide lenses namely Canon EF-16-35mm f/4L IS USM and the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM in addition to its EF and EF-S lenses line-up. Both lenses were introduced last May 13, 2014 together with the Canon EOS 100D White Edition. Accordingly to the Press Release, these wide-angle lenses provides photographers with the ability to capture stunning photographs and videos of spacious landscapes.... These newest lenses might be a great tool for those who do Photo-journalism and Travel Photography given its wider range scopes.

For this particular post, let's try to dig more and review instead the Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM including its key specifications.

The Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM with an aperture of f4.5-5.6 is an ultra wide-lens designed to be a video lens for APS-C users. Other APS-C Sensor size EOS models are also compatible with this lens however both Canon EOS 70D, Canon EOS 100D and the Canon EOS 700D are considered to be a great companion for this lens given a larger part of video capabilities for instances.

Aside of being an ultra-wide lens, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm comes with an Optical Image Stabilizer with 4.0 equivalent stops for blur-free and/or shake-correction producing excellent high resolution images, and STM (Stepping Motor Technology) for silent and smooth focusing on shooting videos with continuous auto-focusing. Additionally, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM comes with 7-blade circular aperture diaphragms producing soft backgrounds, 1 UD lens element for chromatic aberration reduction throughout its maximum zoom range of 18mm and multi-layer lens coatings for excellent color balance minimizing flares. Not only that, this ultra-wide lens comes at a very affordable price at $299.00 converted to Php at almost P13,000.00.

The Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM also comes with full-time manual focus allowing manual focus adjustments while in AF mode.

CONCLUSION:
Although we haven't tried the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM on hand given that it will be expected to be available in the market by June, the given information provided by Canon can justify its performance subjectively. With Image Stabilizer Technology combined with 4.0 equivalent f-stops, an image produced is more likely clean and blur-free. Additionally, the STM Technology complements the lens which delivers a silent and smooth focusing  system especially on video shooting mode. The Ultra-Low Dispersion lens element and improved super Spectra Coatings deliver sharp, high contrast and glare-free images.

Overall, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM is a better ultra-wide lens for price-conscious photographers.
