BRAND: Canon
LENS MOUNT: EF-M
COMPATIBILITY: EOS M
A new and much smaller lens mount compared to the EF and EF-S lenses, the EF-M is the Canon's newest added lens mount developed in parallel with the EOS M Camera, the first mirrorless interchangeable camera of Canon.
Image above shows the 3 available EF-M lenses for Canon EOS M camera. These new set of EF-M Lens Mounts are as follows:
- Canon EF-M 22mm STM: Prime Lens: With f2 focal length
- Canon EF-M 18-55mm IS STM: Standard Zoom Lens: With f3.5-5.6 focal length
- Canon EF-M 11-22mm IS STM: Wide-angle Zoom Lens: With f4-5.6 focal length
Announced last July 23, 2012 together with the Canon EOS M Camera, the EF-M is designed exclusively for the use of the said interchangeable camera. What's something remarkable for this new set of len mounts is the added development of the flange focal distance at 18mm compared to 44mm for both EF and EF-S lenses. Additionally, it offers the STM (Silent Motor) technology which is known for its smooth and silent focusing. The two lenses introduced during the launching were the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM as the standard kit zoom lens and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM as the prime lens "pancake". These set of lenses feature the same focal length multiplier known as the crop factor at approximately 1.6x as a cropped field of view.
Image above shows the Canon EOS M red design with the 3-different EF-M lenses and the Canon EOS M body without the lens. It also shows the approximately height and length as compared to the other EF-M lens mounts.
Just last June 2013, Canon announced an additional EF-M lens for the EF-M series. This is the Canon EF-M 11-22m f/4-5.6 IS STM, a wide-angle zoom lens type. It was released by Canon Japan and was likely sold for Asian Markets as of the moment. This new type EF-M lens has the equivalent focal length range of 18-55mm and is the first wide zoom lens of Canon with image stabilizer technology (IS) allowing the photographer to shoot at 3-stops slower compensation for blur-free images results. Accordingly, the new lens includes the company's "Dynamic IS" good for movie shooting and even includes 12 elements in 9 group designs and 2 aspheric elements.
